SIPA is pushing back the barriers of rigid packaging by introducing PET to the world of prestige perfumes. Traditionally the exclusive domain of glass, this market is seeing a shift in attitude as SIPA demonstrates that PET can be just as beautiful and refined while shatterproof and lighter.

Target

The primary goal of this project was to challenge the long-standing monopoly of glass in the luxury perfume and high-end cosmetics sector.

Market Displacement: To prove that PET can replace glass in the "refined world" of fragrances without losing the premium feel.
Supply Chain Security: To offer a reliable alternative to glass bottles, which are currently plagued by global supply chain issues.
Sustainability Benchmark: To align with the "green" initiatives of major luxury groups (like LVMH) by testing and utilizing bio-based and energy-efficient materials.

Result

The project successfully produced a series of high-end prototypes that meet the aesthetic standards of the luxury industry:

  • Product Specs: Developed classic 50-mL perfume bottles in a variety of vibrant colors.
  • Manufacturing Excellence: Produced using the ECS SP 80 injection-stretch-blow molding system, which ensures the high-precision finish required for luxury goods.
  • Material Innovation: Demonstrated the feasibility of using "green" PET, including bio-PET derived from wood residues, moving toward a carbon-negative footprint.
  • Showcase Success: The prototypes were featured at Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna few years ago, receiving acclaim for their glass-like clarity and premium appearance.

  • Lightweight Construction: PET is substantially lighter than glass, which dramatically reduces transport costs and associated carbon emissions throughout the distribution network.
  • Infrangibility (Shatterproof): Unlike glass, PET is shatterproof. This inherent durability eliminates breakage during shipping and provides a safer experience for the end consumer, especially in bathroom environments.
  • Superior Ecology: PET requires significantly less energy to convert into a finished bottle compared to the high-heat processes required for glass manufacturing.
