Technical context and market drivers

The transition to the GME 30.40 standard was driven by an optimization strategy initiated by a leading regional bottling partner. The bottling partner transitioned all of its CSD and Still Mineral Water (SMW) production lines from the traditional PCO 1881 standard to the lighter GME 30.40 finish.

Under the bottler's operational footprint, four to five Nitro Hot-Fill lines were still operating with the older 1881 neck finish. Because the partner produces its own preforms internally, standard 1881 CSD preforms were historically shared for Nitro Hot-Fill applications, with the sole adjustment of using a resin grade suitable for hot-filling.

Following the widespread conversion of the CSD and SMW lines to GME 30.40, maintaining the 1881 neck finish exclusively for the remaining hot-fill lines lacked logistical and operational efficiency. When a project arose for a new Nitro Hot-Fill line in one global bottler’s regional plant, SIPA secured the contract. This presented a pivotal technical choice: remain with the established 1881 standard or test and scale the GME 30.40 neck finish into industrial production for hot-fill applications.

Development, testing, and validation phase

To verify the feasibility of using the CSD-designed GME 30.40 neck for Nitro Hot-Fill applications, SIPA initiated a pilot development program targeted specifically at a 400 ml flagship juice container.

The validation process followed a rigorous testing roadmap:

    • Material Utilization: The global beverage group supplied existing GME 30.40 preforms and closures originally intended for CSD bottles. SIPA utilized these standard components to develop the 400 ml Nitro Hot-Fill container geometry.
    • Laboratory Testing: Validation trials were conducted at the SIPA LAB facility in close cooperation with the global partner’s technical center in Europe. Laboratory testing focused on the neck's performance under thermal stress and internal pressure, yielding completely positive results.
    • Industrial Deployment: To confirm the laboratory findings, final testing was moved to the commercial production site. Upon commissioning the new line, the system replicated the precise performance metrics achieved during the laboratory phase, confirming the reliability of the finish under real-world industrial conditions.

    • Regulatory and Closure Compatibility: The design is fully tetherable, aligning with strict environmental regulations regarding attached caps.

Securing official validation as a world-first for a Nitro Hot-Fill application on the GME 30.40 standard establishes a new benchmark for PET packaging efficiency. This development provides beverage bottlers worldwide with a field-tested blueprint to streamline preform inventory, reduce PET resin consumption, and lower production costs while maintaining strict product quality and line efficiency.
